Hospital Veterinarian

Animal Behavior Manager

Thrift Store Warehouse Associate

Hospital Veterinarian


JHS has a position open for a veterinarian at the public hospital.  The veterinarian provides high quality medical and surgical care to clients of the JHS animal hospital.  He/she delivers and ensures humane medical treatment of all animals seen in the hospital.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Sees appointments and performs medical casework and treatments
  • Educates clients on the proper care of animals
  • Maintains records properly
  • Promotes a positive attitude in the workplace
  • Promotes humane attitudes towards the care and treatment of animals through education and example
  • Ensures appropriate medication is administered by veterinary staff as directed
  • Advises, performs or oversees euthanasia
  • Provides on-call services for hospital animal emergencies
  • Promotes sterilization of owned animals in an effort to reduce pet-overpopulation
  • Keeps up to date on product knowledge and actively engages in product sales
  • Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses.  Adheres to state regulations and organizational protocol regarding animal care, treatment, advocacy and the mission of JHS.
  • Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
Qualifications
  • Current license in the State of Florida to practice veterinary medicine
  • Must be able to deliver quality veterinary care in fast paced, high volume environment
  • A minimum of two years clinic/practice experience preferred.
  • Maintenance of malpractice insurance.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions
  • Proven organizational, time management, and planning skills required
  • Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a culturally diverse staff, volunteers and community in a professional, pleasant, and respectful manner at all times
  • Maturity with ability to use good judgment and display a professional manner

Animal Behavior Manager/Trainer


JHS has a position available for an animal behavior manager/trainer.  This is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the shelter operations manager.   The animal behavior manager/trainer develops, implements and monitors all programs intended to identify, correct and prevent problem behavior in animals.  This includes but is not limited to directing canine behavior training classes, evaluating shelter animals for adoption and conducting behavior consultations for community pet owners.  The animal behavior manager/trainer trains and manages the behavior department staff to meet department goals.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as chief behavior consultant for community pet owners via phone, written correspondence, email and personal appointments
  • Provide referral information and advice on animal behavior issues, training methods, training equipment and animal trainers
  • Design shelter animal behavior programs using positive reinforcement training methods.  Includes the participation in evaluation of animals, preparation of written programs.
  • Design and implement behavior modification, training and enrichment protocols to improve behavior and chance of adoption.  Monitor and adjust protocols as necessary
  • Evaluate behavior of shelter animals for adoptability and assist staff with adoption counseling, safe animal handling and euthanasia decisions
  • Provide post-adoption and pre-surrender behavior assistance including the support of Pet Safety Net initiatives
  • Oversee, train and monitor volunteer and staff trainers as they work with individual animals
  • Manage the daily activities of the behavior department including scheduling training and behavior classes
  • Oversee and ensure that all staff are trained to properly identify and report problem behaviors and assist with the modification or prevention of such behaviors
  • Screen volunteer trained handlers who participate in behavior program and direct the training of novices
  • Continually supervise volunteers and staff activities providing guidance and support
  • Develop, recommend, and implement education and training programs to ensure staff development
  • Organize playgroups and develop and implement enrichment programs
  • Record and report progress and effectiveness of all behavior information including behavior assessments and modification programs.  Track, analyze and report relevant statistics and make recommendations for program modification accordingly
  • Conduct and supervise dog-dog and dog-cat meetings
  • Attend outreach events and special events to increase public awareness.  Participate in youth activities including Camp Paw Prints
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • CPDT preferred
  • Animal training, behavior knowledge and experience to include theory of positive reinforcement, animal training techniques, canine temperament testing and the ability to assess and evaluate new animal training methods and equipment
  • 1-3 years program management experience
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public, fellow employees and volunteers.
  • Good computer skills that include the ability to prepare reports and maintain an efficient records system
  • Self-motivated and well organized to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced work environment
  • Desire to continually upgrade skills and education by attending seminars, workshops and professional conferences
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes evening, weekend and holiday hours
Working Conditions
This position requires the ability to deal with a variety of dogs and cats with varying temperaments.  There is a high noise level and possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.

Thrift Store Warehouse Associate

JHS has a part-time position available in the thrift store as a warehouse associate.  This position will report directly to the thrift store manager.  The warehouse associate is responsible for assisting in the retail business operations so that donors and customers have a quality experience.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Greets donors and assists in accepting donations
  • Assists with loading/unloading purchases or donations
  • Assists with processing, pricing, testing and sorting donated merchandise
  • Keeps merchandise stocked, well displayed and organized
  • Ensures cleanliness of store at all times
  • Assists in inventory control process
  • Assists thrift store driver when needed
  • Assists with supervising community service workers
  • Performs other miscellaneous tasks as needed
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • General merchandise knowledge
  • 1-2 years of retail sales experience preferred
  • Proven communication skills and a genuine, pleasant demeanor with customers, the public, and staff
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to self-motivate
  • Ability to work well under pressure

  • Ability to lift up to 80 lbs, stand for extended periods, bend stoop and kneel

This position requires working on Saturdays.  All JHS positions require a criminal background check and drug screening.
