Becoming a JHS Volunteer

Jacksonville Humane Society mission statement:

"The Jacksonville Humane Society provides care, comfort and compassion to animals in need while engaging the hearts, hands and minds of our community to bring about an end to the killing of abandoned and orphaned shelter animals."

 

The Jacksonville Humane Society Volunteer Program offers several ways for community members to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals in Northeast Florida. Volunteers assist in customer service, the care of the animals, fundraising, off-site adoptions, special events, and foster parenting (just to name a few!). Below are the steps to becoming a JHS Volunteer.

 

Select your situation:

 

Student Community Service (16+) - Less than 25 hours

Select volunteer roles are availble for students needing fewer than 25 documented hours. These roles require little training, and are intended to get you started as soon as possible.

 

Tasks include

  • Enrichment toy making (for dogs and cats)
  • Laundry (Huge need for this!)
  • General office help (Folding letters, filing, etc)

Requirements

  • The minimum age to volunteer is 16 years
  • Those 16 and 17 years old must have their parents sign their volunteer waiver
  • Print and fill out the Volunteer Waiver.
    • Bring this to the interview
    • Do NOT drop it off at the shelter before your scheduled interview
  • Bring your form for hours documentation from your school
    • If you school does not require a form, a letter on letterhead can be provided to you once you complete your hours.
  • Complete our online application (link below)
  • Sign-up for and attend a volunteer interview (instructions given after the online application is approved)
  • Pay the $25 program fee (Cash or card only)
  • Receive your volunteer tshirt and nametag and set-up a schedule
  • After completing your hours, you may choose to say on as a long-term individual volutneer. This opens up more volunteer roles to you!

Student Community Service (16+) - More than 25 hours

For people looking to make a long-term commitment to our volunteer program, we have several volunteer opportunities. "Long-term" is a minimum 3 month commitment of at least once a week. Of course, you can volunteer more than that too!

These volunteer roles require training and are designed for the long-term volunteer in mind. On your online application you will select one role to get started.

  • Phone and Office Support
  • Dog Handling
  • Kitty & Puppy Butler
  • Kitten University Volunteer
  • Thrift Store Assistant
  • Informational Event Volunteer
  • Humane Education Assistant

Group Volunteering - Adult Groups (18+)

Thank you for your interest in contributing to the Jacksonvile Humane Society! There are several ways for your group to become involved.

  • Fundraiser or Donation Drive
  • On-site group volunteering
    • View the list of Group Volunteer Opportunities
    • Preference is given to groups would can commit to three or more volunteer sessions, but single day volunteering is just fine! 
    • Want to book a date? Email possible dates and group information to volunteer@jaxhumane.org
    • Request should be made 2 or more weeks from desired date, and dates not not guaranteed.
    • Each participant should sign the Group Volunteering Waiver
  • JHS Promote A Pet
    • Share the story of a long-term shelter cat or dog and help get them adopted!
    • Sharing can include social media, distributing flyers, and emailing your contacts
    • You are also encouraged to collect items or funds to donate to the animal and their future adopter

Adult Individual Volunteers (18+)

Individuals 15 Years and Younger

  • Are you a kid who cares? Organize a fundraiser, donation drive, or toy-making project with your friends to help the homeless animals!
    • The kids who care form will let us know about your project as well a provides you with tips and tricks for organizing fundraisers and donation drives.
    • Interested in making some toys for shelter animals? View our enrichment toy making page for ideas.
  • On-site volunteer opportunities for those under 15 are unavailable at this time. We encourage you to visit Hands On Jacksonville, a community organization which connects you to other non-profits in need of help. Many of the organizations advertise their age limits.
 

Court-Ordered Community Service (18+)

If you choose the Jacksonville Humane Society to fulfill your court-ordered community service hours, please follow the guidelines listed below:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • Have appropriate paperwork from the court
  • Wear close toed shoes, jeans or knee-length shorts, t-shirt or warmer shirt dependedant on the weather (choose clothes you don't mind getting dirty and/or stained)  
  • Attend orientation any day Monday through Saturday at 7:30am. No need to pre-register.

Our court-ordered community service program is first come first serve basis; 8 people maximum per day. If you wish to start your hours the same day as orientation you shoud be here no later than 6:45am to beat the crowd.
