JACKSONVILLE HUMANE SOCIETY MARKS ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF TRAGIC FIRE

On April 7, 2008, staff, volunteers and board members of the Jacksonville Humane Society gathered together at a private memorial service to honor the 86 pets that perished one year ago.

“This year has been a mixture of tragedy, grief, hope and opportunity. After the fire when we were all numb and grief-stricken, so many came and stood by our side to help us get through, one moment at a time. There were the firefighters who risked their lives to save many animals. How lucky we are to live in a community where these brave men and women will save animals at great risk to themselves. Then the Red Cross counselors who helped us work through the intense feelings we each experienced…the people in our community who donated to help us get back on our feet. And we did! While we are in cramped, temporary quarters, we have taken in and adopted out more animals in the first quarter of 2008 than in the same quarter prior to the fire. While we look back and remember the 86 furry friends that are no longer with us, we honor their spirit by remembering them and finding the inspiration to move forward in building a new facility.”
