Pet Laws

Registration & Vaccination

  • All pets four months and older are required to have a current rabies vaccination and city license. You can get a license from your veterinarian or Animal Care & Protective Services. For information please call 904-630-2489.
  • All dogs, cats, and ferrets living in the City of Jacksonville are required to get an annual rabies vaccination. At the time of inoculation, your veterinarian must sell you the City of Jacksonville Rabies Tag or provide you with the paperwork to purchase the tag from the City of Jacksonville Tax Collector. The annual fee for an animal license in the City of Jacksonville is $20. Pet license applications can be downloaded from the city's Animal Care & Protective Services website.
  • Fees for pet registration in the City of Jacksonville are provided at no cost to owners who are 62 years of age or older, legally blind or 100 percent disabled.
  • If you live at the beach or in Baldwin, please contact your local animal control office for pet licensing laws.

Property & Leash Laws

  • All pets are required to be on a leash when being walked in the City of Jacksonville.
  • When left unattended, dogs and cats must remain on the pet owner’s property. They are not allowed to roam.
  • When you are walking your pet, be sure to carry waste bags. It is your responsibility to clean up after your pet.

Food, Water & Shelter

  • Any animal left outside for any length of time must have access to shelter consisting of at least three sides, a floor and a waterproof roof. Violations can result in a civil fine up to $500.
