September is back to school month for your kids…
now what about your pets?
Your kids and your pet spent the whole summer together paw in arm and now that school is back in session your pet is staring out the window with those sad eyes waiting for your kids to get home. Is it separation anxiety or are they just sad? Here are some tips on how you can make the back to school transition for your pets a smooth one.
- Routine…Routine…Routine-You spent the summer going to the beach, long walks and trips to the park with your kids and your pets! Now its time to make sure you replace your pets’ summer routine with a new one! Once he gets used to your kids coming home and playing with him at 3:30 everyday he will quickly look forward to that time now.
- Let your pet “help” your kids with homework time! They can curl up next to your kids while they do their math homework or be a great listener for that reading assignment.
- Exercise is an important part of your pets’ daily routine. Remember even if you and your kids have had a busy day your pet has not. Providing your pet with play and exercise will help them release some of that pent up energy!
- If you and your kids are going to be gone for the day make sure you provide them with some fun interactive toys so they don’t get bored!
- Does your pet just have the blues or do they actually have separation anxiety from your kids going back to school? If your pet is becoming destructive when everyone is gone, you’ll need to do some training. For training advice and training programs visit our pet behavior page.
Remember, it’s up to you and your family to help your pets with their “back-to-school blues!”
