Volunteer
FAQs
Q: What is the minimum age to volunteer?
A: You must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer. A parent/guardian must attend the Volunteer Orientation with anyone 16 or 17 years of age. The parent/guardian may choose to become a volunteer with their child, but it is not required.
Q: Can you give me a letter verifying my school service hours?
A: Yes, however, please do not rely on us to keep a record of your service hours. Always remember, your service hours (time spent volunteering with us) are your investment! Make sure that you track your hours diligently.
Q: Can I complete my court-ordered community service at the JHS?
A: Yes, you can. However, that program is not managed through the volunteer office. The Volunteer Services Manager cannot sign-off on any document verifying court-ordered community service. For more information, please come to the shelter’s Administration building at 8:00am, Monday – Saturday. Bring your paperwork with you and be ready to work the same day.
Q: Can I volunteer for just a few hours?
A: New volunteers are recruited into ongoing volunteer positions for which there typically pre-requisite trainings.
If you would like to volunteer as part of a group (coworkers, Girl/Boy Scouts, youth group, etc.) then you are a part of a service group (service page is coming soon). Service groups cannot participate in tasks that involve animal handling, but instead help the animals by primarily performing groundskeeping/shelter beautification projects. As our staff and budget are limited, service groups help us keep our shelter’s 11.6 acres nice and tidy.
Q: I have read all of the materials and I am ready to commit to working for the animals! How do I become a “bone-a-fide” JHS volunteer?
A: It is great to hear that you want to make an onoing commitment to serve the pets and people of Jacksonville!
