To do our part to minimize the spread of COVID-19, JHS is making the following changes to our procedures:


Adoptions will be by appointment only; 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Use the links below to:

August is National Clear the Shelters Month. Our adoption specials include:

August 1st and 2nd:  Name Your Price for Dogs Over 30 lbs and Cats Over Six Months

August 15th and 16th: $20 Adoptions for All Animals

August 28th and 29th: Free Adoptions for All Animals

The Pet Help Center will remain open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment only.

If you find a lost pet, please exhaust all attempts to find the owners. We have many tips and local resources to help you.

Veterinary Services is open by appointment only. You will receive information prior to your appointment about what to expect before you arrive.

Our community programs, including Pawsitive Reading, Dogs Day Out, and Shelter Staycations, are on hold. We cannot take in any new volunteers at this time.

You can support neighbors in need by donating dog or cat food. Cat food is our #1 need.

JHS is an independent, local 501c3. Your monetary donation will help us save the lives of nearly 9,000 pets and serve 3,500 families this year.

August is a busy, busy month for adoptions! Help us ring in the Summer with our August adoption events below!

Salute to Summer (August 15th & 16th): Salute your Summer with $20 adoption fees for ALL pets!

Clear the Shelters (August 28th & 29th): FREE adoptions for all pets! Help JHS #ClearTheShelters in this nationwide pet adoption drive that helps find loving homes for animals in need.

All animals will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines.

Appointments must be made online and in advance to ALL adoption events above. Please visit to browse our available pets and to schedule an appointment time to come to JHS. 


Join us on International Cat Day for a cup of coffee and the chance to get up close and “purrsonal” with friendly felines who need homes.

For a $10 donation, you will be able to enter the café and receive a complimentary coffee from Coffee Perks, as well as some light food.

Adoption fees are waived for this event and Community First Credit Union is matching donations!

This pop-up event will take place on the second floor of the Adoption and Education Center in the education room at JHS.  You can shop our JHS boutique, too!

In an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community, JHS asks that all attendees recognize the following:

Tickets to this event are required. All visitors will be required to wear face masks in accordance with the City of Jacksonville mandate. Space will be provided for social distancing and groups should be no more than 10 individuals. Food will be served to go. The room will be cleaned after each group. Children must be supervised at all times. If you are not feeling well, we ask that you stay home. Thank you for understanding and keeping our community safe.

This year, Mutt March is going virtual!

Grab your laptop, tablet or smartphone and join us on Saturday, April 11, for Jacksonville’s first-ever virtual Mutt March!

In an effort to minimize the impact of COVID-19 in our community, we’re excited to share that our Mutt March pet walk and festival will be moving online this year. Look out world, we’re taking over the internet!

During our virtual Mutt March, you can walk your pup around your neighborhood (or cuddle the cat from your couch!) and participate in all the festivities via Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, Twitter and the JHS website on April 11th with hundreds of other pet enthusiasts.

Jacksonville, we need your support to meet our fundraising goal of $100,000 for the animals.

The Jacksonville Humane Society is having a “FELINE FRENZY,” offering FREE spay and neuter for any community cat in Duval County, FL. Our goal is to fix 100 Duval cats in 1 day to help stop the kitten crisis. Will you join us?

Celebrate National Read Across America Day at the Jacksonville Humane Society on Monday, March 2!

People of all ages are invited to visit JHS between 12-7pm to read out loud to the dogs and cats. From 3-6pm only, enjoy light refreshments and special activities including:

Reading out loud is a wonderful form of enrichment for animals in shelters – it lowers their stress levels, helps them feel more calm in their kennels, and also helps them feel more comfortable around people.

Bring home a Hollywood star this weekend and adopt a Pawscar nominee…for free!

Join us for the PAWSCARS on Saturday, February 8, and Sunday, February 9, and meet hundreds of award-worthy pets. Our Adoption Center at 8464 Beach Blvd. will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. Adopters will have the opportunity to walk the red carpet and have a glamorous “going home” photo snapped by the paw-parazzi.

Pawscar-nominated pets will be FREE to adopt during this event. Additional fees, like a city rabies license fee or the cost of a leash or collar, may apply.
