JHS Announces Recognition of $1 Million Grant from Petco Foundation

Funds to Assist in Continuation of Life-Saving Work in Community

Jacksonville, FL (Friday, September 19, 2015) The Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) announced September 19 that a $1 million grant was received from the Petco Foundation for The Campaign for a Compassionate Community. The campaign’s focus is constructing a new shelter facility for the animals at JHS.

“The Petco Foundation is proud to invest in the Jacksonville Humane Society’s leadership, and support them in maintaining Jacksonville’s status as a national leader in the no-kill movement,” said Susanne Kogut, Executive Director, Petco Foundation.

The Campaign for a Compassionate Community began in 2013, with the purpose of generating funds to construct a new Humane Care & Education Center on the campus on Beach Blvd. In 2007, a tragic fire burned JHS to the ground and the organization has been operating out of temporary structures ever since.

“We are extremely grateful that a national organization such as the Petco Foundation has selected us as a recipient of their generosity. This will aid us in building a premiere facility to serve Jacksonville’s animals and further inspire our community to think adoption first for decades to come,” said Denise Deisler, Executive Director, Jacksonville Humane Society.

This year JHS will find homes for more than 6,000 animals and will provide approximately 5,600 spay and neuter surgeries. Additionally, JHS offers a variety of services to the community including: providing services to pet owners in times of financial crisis, low cost veterinary care, and humane education to more than 5,000 children through programs such as Camp Paw Prints, school visits and the Pawsitive Reading Program.

In 2011 JHS took the first step toward recovery after the fire by constructing a first class community animal hospital. The hospital reflects the latest in animal care, and is an example of the high standards that JHS plans to achieve for the rest of the campus.
