If your pet is in need of behavior training or social activities, sign them up for one of our classes. All classes are held at our Adoption, Education and Pet Help Center. JHS uses a positive reinforcement method for training.

Available Classes:

NEW: Life Skills 101

Life Skills 101 features tricks and games designed to build the foundation for off-leash control and teach skills that dogs need in life, like sit, stay, and come. You and your pup will tackle these skills and more in a creative and fun trick-themed environment. If you do your homework, you can earn a Trick Dog title at the end of the class.

All pets must be spayed/neutered and current on vaccines to attend. JHS Training Classes are non-refundable.

$125, 6 sessions ($100 for pets adopted from JHS*)


NEW: Trick Dog

Our new Trick Dog class is for all dogs of all ages. This class covers skills that spark excitement – for example, hoop jumping, bowing, and “get your leash” – and is designed to teach you and your pup how to have fun together while they learn and problem solve. Bring a sense of humor! Teaching tricks is a positive method of training and promotes a bond between dogs and their humans. If you do your homework, you can earn a Trick Dog title at the end of the class.

One-on-One Dog Training

Is your dog better without a group? Maybe you prefer a more personalized experience? Sign up for a one-on-one class! These sessions are one hour each. You can communicate with our trainer beforehand so that a lesson can be tailor-made for you and your pup. These sessions are open to dogs of all sizes, 4 months and up.

All pets must be spayed/neutered and current on vaccines to attend. JHS Training Classes are non-refundable.

$150, 3 private sessions ($125 for pets adopted from JHS*)


Top Four

Our Top Four class is designed for dogs of all ages who have had no prior training. This four-week course will cover the essentials: (1) come, (2) leash walking, (3) sit, down, stay, and (4) leave it/drop it.

All pets must be spayed/neutered and current on vaccines to attend. JHS Training Classes are non-refundable.

$90, 4 sessions (no discount for pets adopted from JHS)


Dog Manners – Basic

Does your dog need some help learning basic commands? Our instructor will help both you and your dog learn the skills necessary to become a polite pooch. Our trainer will assess the group to learn which skills will be most beneficial to you and your dog, including – but not limited to – sit, stay, down, recall and leash manners. This class is for dogs 6 months and up.

All pets must be spayed/neutered and current on vaccines to attend. JHS Training Classes are non-refundable.

Puppy and Small Dogs – Basic

New puppy? No problem! Our Puppy 101 class will help you and your pup learn all the basics needed to become an outstanding family pet. Basics skills taught may include, but are not limited to, housebreaking tips, leash manners, mouthing, sit, stay, down, and recall. Small dogs up to 30 lbs are also welcome!

Advanced Manners

Has your dog completed either our Puppy class or Basic class? Or a beginner class with another trainer? This is the next step! Learn more advanced (and even some off-leash) commands for your pup in this next level course. Topics may include adding more duration and distractions to existing skills, hand signals, back up and stand, and some Canine Good Citizen steps like working near other dogs and supervised separation from the handler.

Canine Good Citizen

If your dog has mastered basic skills and is ready to learn more, this is the class for you. This class tests dogs in simulated everyday situations in a relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere. This program rewards dogs that have the training and demeanor to be reliable family members as well as community members in good standing. Learn more about CGC training here.

*A discount is available for training classes for pets who were adopted from JHS. Please email your name and your pet’s name to events@jaxhumane.org to receive the discount code, call 904-725-8766 ext. 4573 or reach out to your adoption counselor via the Maddie’s Fund app.

All classes are held at the Jacksonville Humane Society Adoption, Education and Pet Help Center.

Upon arrival, please come to the main building. You may park anywhere in our lot. Look for the “Adoption and Education” sign, located near the wishing fountain and glass double doors. To the left of the main entrance, you will see a door labeled “Staff Entrance.” Please enter and take the stairs to the second floor. Training classes are in the large multi-purpose room on the second floor.

An elevator is available inside the main building. Go through the door directly across from the entrance and look to the left for the elevator.

Please come directly to the training room.

We ask that you also use these doors to exit the building. Thank you!

What to Bring

Please bring:

  • 1 standard 6-foot leash (no retractable leashes allowed)
  • 1 regular buckle collar or martingale collar (no prong collars or choke chains allowed)
  • Soft treats, such as “training treats”
  • A bathmat, towel or yoga mat
  • For trick dog classes: a clicker (optional)
  • Your questions for our trainer
  • Your dog!
